HOW IT WORKS

For three days from the 18th to 20th of June 2025 (or another date throughout June), students will eat the same rations as a refugee living in an urban refugee camp in Jordan and get sponsored to do it.

The funds raised by your school will help provide emergency food, healthcare and life-changing support for refugees and communities affected by conflict and disaster.

By putting themselves in the shoes of a refugee, your students will develop greater awareness of current global issues and empathy for refugees while making a difference. In sharing their experience with others, they in turn raise awareness which is key to acting for peace in the world.

WHAT'S INVOLVED ?

1. Signing up a school – Teachers can sign up their school using the button below. Once a school is registered, teachers will have access to their own dashboard where they can manage their schools Ration Challenge and access supportive resources.

2. Getting students involved – Teachers will request parental/guardian consent, and then students with appropriate permissions are given a personal fundraising page so they can ask friends and family to sponsor them. Teachers, parents and guardians can take part too!

3. Students learn and fundraise – in the lead up to (and during) Ration Challenge week, students are asked to do their best to fundraise and are challenged to learn more about some of the issues impacting refugees.

4. Ration Challenge week – For the 3 days of the challenge, participants drink only water and eat only the contents of their ration pack, along with a little extra rice and flour, and any rewards they earn. A multivitamin is also optional.

SO, WHAT ARE THE RATIONS

Ration Packs contain a 3-day supply of exactly the same food, in almost exactly the same quantities, that our local partner distributes to refugees living in urban refugee camps in Jordan.

They also contain two food ‘coupons’ for additional rice and flour, representative of the food coupons some refugees receive from other aid agencies. Students can also earn additional food rewards by hitting fundraising targets.

Vegetarian? Vegan? No problem, just swap the sardines for tofu.

Ration Pack Contents:
- 420g rice
- 72g lentils
- 36g dried chickpeas
- 1 tin of sardines
- 1 can of kidney beans
- 130ml vegetable oil (self-supplied)
- Rice from the 'coupon' (self-supplied) 400g
- Flour from the 'coupon' (self-supplied) 170g

REWARDS

Refugees are resilient, resourceful and hard-working people. But to protect local jobs, many countries (including Jordan) deny or tightly limit work rights for refugees. This means they need to find other ways to provide for their families.

Your students won’t have time to grow their own vegetables or set-up a business during the Ration Challenge, so instead they can earn extra ingredients by working hard at their fundraising. When they hit the following fundraising goals, help more people and earn these much-needed rewards.

Individually or as a group, present the Ration Challenge at assembly and earn 30g of sugar.

Sponsor yourself! Earn a single dried spice to add to your rations for the week.

Run your own event at school and earn a piece of fruit.

Spread the word! Earn a teabag or teaspoon of milo for every five people you ask to sponsor you.

Raise $75, and you can add unlimited salt to your rations.

Raise $150, and you can add 130ml of milk to your rations.

Raise $350, and you can add 110g of a vegetable to your rations.

Raise $600, and you can add 100g of protein to your rations.

Raise $800, and you will be able to add 200g of tinned tomatoes to your rations.

Raise $1,200 and you can add one hot or cold drink (330ml) to your rations.

“The Ration Challenge was a really confronting experience, and the thought of not being able to have access to food when I was hungry was quite scary. By taking part in the challenge I was most definitely able to understand how it feels for refugees to ration their food. It really opened my eyes.”
